Developing the Self-Awareness Weekend

Traditional treatment approaches take too long to be effective in today’s fast-paced, changing world.

I became discouraged after several years of hearing clients relating stories of how, with long-term therapy, they often:

  1. Got little or nothing out of it.
  2. Did not achieve results fast enough.
  3. Did not achieve permanent changes.

If they did have breakthroughs, they came after many years of traditional weekly hourly sessions. This lengthy treatment process was obviously enriching my colleagues at the expense of their clients and their insurance companies. Abnormal behavior was often extinguished for only a short period of time between sessions, only to reappear again. This emotional roller coaster was extremely expensive for insurance companies, which often spend in excess of 20% of all provider expenditures in the mental health field.

I believed that my clients deserved better, shorter treatment approaches than others were offering, without the emotional roller coaster. I also believed that by shortening treatment time, this would be made much more cost effective for insurance companies. My search for better, more effective treatment approaches began in 1982.

In order to focus on the client’s problem and effect a change, it was imperative to use a treatment modality which would result in immediate “breakthroughs” for the client, with reinforcement of the changes via short term therapy.

The answer, Redecision Therapy, was found through arduous research and rigorous training. Redecision Therapy combines the best elements of Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. It has been used successfully for over 30 years and has proven itself many times in difficult cases where other methods have failed. This process is a powerful way of working with clients to help them resolve family of origin issues as well as internal conflicts. It is ideal short-term therapy.

As children grow up, they have positive and negative experiences and receive messages by their caretakers and society. Based on these experiences and message, they make decisions about themselves and others that will direct them throughout their lives, and influence their behavior. As children, these behaviors were necessary to survive in their families; but, as adults these behaviors are no longer useful and become hindrances to getting what they want in their lives. As adults, people choose friends and partners who replicate their childhood struggle and support the decisions and behaviors they made.

One of the tenets of Redecision Therapy is that a self-enhancing redecision can only be made when the client is experiencing the same intensity of thought, feeling, and behavior that was present when the original decision was made as a child. Traditional psychotherapeutic techniques often provide tremendous insight for clients, but fail to affect behavioral change because the emotional intensity does not match the early decision. As clients are re-experiencing the original pain, they are supported by the Redecision therapist to redecide, thereby changing their behavior.

I realized that the use of a traditional hour-per-week session could not be effectively used with Redecision Therapy. It is difficult for clients to remember childhood experiences and messages, and experience intense emotions, in such a short session.

The development stage is over. The result is the Self-Awareness Weekend, a concentrated treatment program that has been tested and proven by hundreds of clients. This flexible treatment approach is geared to meet the needs of a wide variety of problems. The connection between self-destructive behavior stemming from negative childhood messages and experiences is examined by the client in a nurturing and safe environment. Clients are able to understand the cause and effect of their behavior, redirect their current self-destructive behavioral patterns, and replace them with self-fulfilling patterns.

The success of this program cannot be overstated. Through a continual gathering of data, many clients are still reporting positive changes years after completing the program. The treatment program gave them the ability to internalize the changes and lead lives without sliding back to old self-defeating patterns. This proven treatment modality continually offers fast, reliable, and enduring results.

This treatment method has proven itself to be:

  • The most beneficial treatment for clients due to its quick, positive results and long-term effects.

  • Beneficial for insurance companies due to the reduced treatment time, cost effectiveness, and desired outcomes.

  • Beneficial for employers due to the reduced time away from work and the enhanced productivity of an emotionally healthy employee.

I am pleased to be able to offer this clinically advanced treatment program to my clients and insurance companies.
