The Healing Power of Groups

Self Awareness Weekend Counseling Program VideoThe vast healing power of the Self-Awareness Weekend Counseling Program is due, in great part, to the safe, nurturing group environment we create.

In fact, the group setting is exactly why SAW is more effective than individual therapy. We limit our SAW groups to 12 individuals, which provide a large enough group for diversity and a small enough group for personalized attention.

Right about now, you may be thinking:

  • “Oh no, a group? I’m only interested in individualized therapy. A group is out of the question.”

  • “I’m a private person. I’d be nervous and uncomfortable the whole time.”

  • “My issues are too embarrassing to share with a group. I couldn’t possibly do it.”

  • “I don’t want others to see me cry and breakdown.”

  • “I’m shy. The Weekend would be over by the time I felt safe to talk.”

These thoughts and reactions are absolutely normal, as most of us have been taught that it’s not OK to share our true feelings with others. Because of that, a group setting can be scary and intimidating at first.

Let us assure you that you will immediately feel welcomed and safe. Any reservations you have about the group setting will be put to rest in the very first hours, and you will be able to participate fully.

“Prior to the Weekend, I was very excited but also nervous about the group setting. I didn’t think I could benefit as greatly or be comfortable sharing the vulnerable inner side of myself with all of those people I didn’t even know. Before I knew it, you had me relaxed, and I was anxious to move on to the next step of the process, allowing me to enjoy life to the fullest!” - Annette W.

“The group setting this program offered concerned me at first, but I quickly recognized that I wasn’t alone. Others were dealing with the same self-defeating behaviors like I was. I soon settled in with some of the most compassionate, resilient, and empathetic people I have ever been exposed to. Everyone played a vital role in helping me complete this program with great success, which has lead to a new beginning.” - John C.

“I really liked how quickly I felt safe, and how easy it was to lose my inhibitions. The Weekend was life-changing and unbelievable. I can’t believe the transformations that occurred before my eyes. These folks (and me, too) came in heavy and now can hardly keep their feet on the ground because they’re so light!” - Jordan H.

Just why are SAW groups so powerful?

  • A group creates a sense of community and lets you know you are not alone. SAW’s environment of inclusion, acceptance, camaraderie, and support is something most people have not experienced before.

  • Through listening and sharing, you will gain insights to your own deep-seated thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and emotions. When one person shares his/her painful experiences, others can identify with those thoughts and feelings, even if the details of their own experiences may be different.

  • As you witness others, you will learn new things about yourself. You will begin to see yourself and others in a new light, making it possible to let go and move on. You will feel a sense of connection and compassion at SAW that you may not have experienced anywhere else.

  • Without a group setting, you would not get the opportunity to safely and realistically practice the skills and tools you learn at SAW before using them in “the real world” when you return to “your life” after the Weekend.

  • Every person who attends SAW will teach you something different and show you something you needed to see. The truth is you wouldn’t get the same results if you didn’t do SAW in a group.

The reality is, none of us can heal alone.

We need others to shine a light on our darkness, to provide the mirror to see ourselves clearly, to offer acceptance when we cannot yet accept ourselves, and to offer love, encouragement, and support to make healthy, lasting changes in our lives.

“I was extremely impressed with the compassion and support of the facilitators and the group members. I left feeling as though I made new friends for a lifetime, but at the same time, I feel as though I’ve known them all my life. It was a revelation to me to realize that I gave each person in the room a gift.” - M.J.J.

“I was amazed by how I feel. I received all of the individual attention that I needed, even though I was in a group setting. I NEVER felt slighted on what I needed, and I learned so much from the others.” - Jennifer K.
